Freezing

The processing plants in Djúpivogur, Húsavík and Thingeyri can freeze their products. The freezing methods used are all those commonly known in land processing. In Húsavík products are mostly quick-frozen, but in addition there is always some block freezing. The Djúpivogur and Thingeyri plants can employ interleaving, IQF and block-freezing. Haddock is the primary frozen product, but there is always some cod along with other varieties.

Interleaved

In Djúpivogur and Thingeyri there is a good facility for the production of interleaved fillets. Catfish, tusk and haddock have been produced in 6-kg packages, as well as a considerable amount of haddock in 20-lb packages for North America. It is actually possible to interleave all varieties of fish in many kinds of packages.

IQF

Portions produced in Húsavík are all quick-frozen. Form fillets are also quick-frozen. Djúpivogur and Thingeyri have good facilities for producing and quick-freezing fillets. Large quantities of haddock fillets have been quick-frozen for the UK and North America. The greatest quantity of quick-frozen product is lightly salted cod fillets. Haddock, saithe and tusk have also been lightly salted and quick-frozen. The freezing capacity in Djúpivogur is 400 kg/hr and 1,500kg/hr in Thingeyri.

Block frozen

Block freezing is available in Húsavík, Djúpivogur and Thingeyri. The production there is mainly block-frozen pieces of cod and haddock, as well as cod and haddock mince.
